Ottawa experiences some extremely cold days during the winter and the mixture of rock salt and liquid brine currently being used on the roads for ice control has a reduced effectiveness or is ineffective on these days. In addition, rock salt poses various environmental and human health problems, as well as other negative impacts such as damaged infrastructure and vehicles. The time is now for Ottawa to begin looking to a better, safer, and more efficient solution for ice control during the cold winter months.
What about the use of propylene glycol as a less toxic form for ice control?
I find it interesting that rock salt has decreasing effectiveness as the temperature gets colder! I would love to know at what temperatures that occurs at and some proposed solutions to this!
Great post!
